A New Way of Looking at Contemporary China

Jade on 36 Restaurant presents a dramatic new way of looking at contemporary China. It is a stunning, modern space inspired by Chinese traditions, but interpreted for the future.

Jade on 36: An Innovative Interpretation of Chinese Traditions

“I wanted to invent a new way of looking at contemporary China,” says Adam D. Tihany, the iconic restaurant designer who conceptualized the design of Jade on 36. “I wanted it to be based on tradition – but set in the future.”

Tihany took three traditional Chinese elements – a blue-and-white porcelain rice bowl, an image of imperial robes, and a snuff bottle – and transformed them into design elements for modern China, elements that fuse the past into the future.

The Deconstructed Rice Bowl

A traditional blue-and-white porcelain rice bowl, a staple in every Chinese household, is deconstructed, stripped down to a cobalt blue tile skeleton. Diners step through the 4.3 meter modernistic sculpture, dotted with lights – “grains of rice” – to enter the restaurant.

The Emperor’s Robes

The unusual ceiling, an origami of overlapping angles, was inspired by the flow, form and opulence of imperial robes. Tihany has abstracted the robes on the ceiling, creating a modern representation of the luxury of an age long past.

The Snuff Bottles

Filled with tobacco, snuff bottles were the chic accessory for the Qing Dynasty elite. The upper classes lavished these exquisite, miniature masterpieces with the finest workmanship as an expression of their refined taste. Here, they are magnified, with poetic Chinese calligraphy brushed within. The snuff bottles also serve as giant lighting fixtures, artistic and tasteful – another Tihany interpretation of classic art the 21st century.
